Wiring your rear fog lights is a great way to increase visibility and safety on the road. However, wiring these lights requires a little bit of work and requires you to know what you are doing.
Start by preparing your vehicle for the project. This includes disconnecting the battery and removing the fog light switch. This will help to protect your vehicle from damage, as well as ensure that you don’t accidentally short circuit any of the wires.
Next, remove the instrument cluster cover and the wood trim underneath it. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws and slide the trim out. This will allow you to access the wiring connections on the back of the fog light switch and the front fog lights.
Locate the brown and gray/blue wires that are connected to the front fog lights on your vehicle and remove the black tape covering them. Then use a razor blade to make a splice opening for the wires that you want to connect to your new rear fog light switch.
If you are unsure about which wires to connect, consult your vehicle’s wiring diagram.
Using a relay is a great option for wiring your LED fog lights. These devices are designed to protect the switch from overheating and help to make a stronger connection to the wires that feed your fog lights. They also come with a numbered terminal that helps you to wire them correctly.
Installing a fuse and a switch is another option for wiring your fog lights. This is because a fuse will help to prevent the switch from overheating and creating resistance. This is especially important if you are using an inline fuse or a relay.
The fuse should be of a higher rating than what you need to run your LED fog lights. A good rule of thumb is to use a fuse with at least 20A of rating.
You should install the fuse in a location that will be out of reach of children or pets. It is also a good idea to place the fuse in a location that will not be exposed to the elements. This will also keep the fuse safe and ensure that it does not get damaged.
If you decide to wire your fog lights using a relay, be sure to use one that has a rated rating of 30-60A. This will allow you to safely run the high current that your LED fog lights require without the worry of overheating or damage to the switch.
Draw a diagram of your wiring plan on plain white paper with the wire gauge noted and colors identified. This will help you to properly identify all the components of your installation and will make it easy to locate them once installed.
Once you have drawn up your diagram, it is time to start wiring the LED fog lights. Once the wiring is complete, it is time to mount the LED fog lights in a location that will provide you with the maximum visibility and safety.
